Airbrush Makeup Tips For the Beginner and Advanced Makeup Artist
Airbrush makeup has become extremely popular recently and we all know why: it is the best way to create a flawless, high-definition look that has been used in Hollywood and Fashion circles for decades. Now airbrush makeup is available to the consumer with many reputable brands releasing fantastic airbrush makeup kits at affordable prices.
If you are new to airbrushing there are some things you need to know before you begin. This article can save you a lot of hassle, guiding you with some simple tips that some of us had to learn through experience! If you have been using airbrush makeup for some time now, this article can still help you since there might be a few tips in here that you were unaware of. We makeup artists need to stick together and we can all learn from each other.
Firstly, if you are thinking of buying an airbrush makeup system you have to educate yourself about the many different brands out there. Read as many airbrush makeup reviews as you can. Familiarize yourself with names like Dinair, Temptu, Luminess Air, MAC Air and many more.
When you have bought your airbrush makeup gun you need to practice, practice, practice! Use just water first, with no makeup in the cup, in order to get a feel for the airbrush as well as the different PSI settings of the compressor. Once you are ready to use makeup in the gun you must make sure your wrist is steady – don’t flex the wrist. When applying the makeup use a circular motion and keep moving. Never stay in a single area otherwise you will have more color in that one spot on your skin. The wonderful thing about airbrushing is that you can use the air as a guide: feel the air on your face and that is where the makeup will land. It may seem like an obvious thing, but some people don’t realise that the distance of the airgun to your skin is a big factor in how concentrated the makeup will be. Usually we airbrush from between 6-12 inches away when applying foundation, blush and highlights. Only go in close for fine, detailed work.
The biggest ‘no, no’ in airbrush makeup is using makeup other than that designed for airbrushing. Never use regular foundation in an airbrush makeup gun. It is thicker and will clog the machine. The airbrush will only work properly if it is kept clean and cleaning only becomes a big problem when you start putting things in there that shouldn’t be there. Airbrush makeup is more liquid than traditional makeup. It is usually water or silicone based so make sure you shake well before use so all the pigments mix well. Most of the time you will only be using 3-4 drops of makeup. There’s really no need for more than that unless you are doing body work.
There is no need to go overboard with airbrush makeup. Subscribe to the ‘less is more’ theory. You want to avoid ‘hot spots’: areas where makeup is thicker than the surrounding areas. Use your eye as a guide and watch the color, not the makeup. You’ll know when you have the right tone because it will look fantastic. It is possible to use a sponge to cover up any spots but you can also do this with short bursts of the airgun. When you do this make sure you release the trigger before pulling away. Otherwise you’ll have excess makeup where it shouldn’t be.
Many, many people make the mistake of squinting when they apply airbrush makeup. Never do this. Although it is wise to keep your eyes closed when spraying around the eye area, if you squint you will create wrinkles and the makeup will build up around them making them look a lot worse. Don’t forget to blend the neck so you don’t have an odd contrast with the rest of your foundation. Luckily this is very easy to do with airbrush makeup as you can create a seemless transition because you are applying makeup with a fine mist.
When you first try the airbrush foundation makeup, test it first on the back of your hand or on a tissue. Do this also when you are mixing colors. That way you’ll always be confident you have the right tone. Remember: trust your own eye and observe the tonal changes. You are the best judge. If you are not feeling confident then start with light bronze colors. They are the most forgiving makeup tones and the best to work with when you are just starting out. Once you feel ready, you can start getting adventurous with the multitude of airbrush makeup colors available. Many systems come with guides and stencils too, so you don’t need to do everything freehand.
Don’t ever get discouraged. Most good airbrush makeup kits come with instructional DVDs and there are plenty of people out there in the airbrush makeup community happy to help. There are several short courses you can attend and some of these will even give you a large discount on your airbrush makeup kit if you purchase it through them.
