Aluminium Bedded Stocks For The Remington 700
The Remington 700 is the World’s most popular bolt action centerfire hunting rifle. No other rifle combines the 700′s strength, affordability, accuracy and ease of upgrade. The Remington 700 is the sniper rifle of choice of the US Army (M24 and XM2010), US Marine Corps (M40) and US Navy SEALs (Mk 13 Mod 5). The US Army, Marines and US Navy SEALs all operate their own M700 derivative as their issue Sniper Weapon System. This popularity has put the Rem 700 at the forefront of design innovation by clone manufacturers and aftermarket parts suppliers.
The Model 700 is very simple to upgrade. An unfortunate aspect of this is the cheap, throwaway plastic stocks that the manufacturer insists on fitting to keep the price of their entry level configurations down. After a new or tuned trigger, the next best accuracy enhancement you will see with your 700 is through improved bedding. Torquing your rifle down onto a modern synthetic stock with an aluminium bedding block or chassis is the best bedding for a rifle used in the great outdoors. These stocks aren’t cheap but will revolutionise the performance of your Model 700 and you won’t have to worry about rain, damp, cleaning fluids or the occasional bump destroying your Remington’s bedding.
Bell and Carlson’s range of stocks are light, rugged, hardwearing and affordable. Bell and Carlson machine an aluminium pillar bedding block and layer a variety of composite materials including fiberglass, aramid fibers, graphite, epoxy gel coats and laminating resins; and polyurethane reinforcement with milled fiberglass. At only two and a half pounds the resulting stock is utterly rigid. The Bell and Carlson Light Tactical stock is typical of their range and offers a good option for right hand short action 700s used in a varmint or predator control role. The Light Tactical Stock has a cut out beneath the rear of the stock to allow the left hand to cradle the rifle for greater control. ‘Glass’ bedding this rifle is a purely cosmetic option.
H-S Precision, manufacturers of the stock used by the US Army for their M24 sniper rifle, likewise take an machined aluminium bedding block and bond it to fiberglass reinforced structural polyurethane foam. This aligns the action perfectly and supports it rigidly. Like the Bell & Carlson these stocks are hand laminated, H-S precision using woven Kevlar/fiberglass cloth with uni-directional, carbon fiber particles for strength and rigidity in a light (2 lb. 12 oz.) package. These stocks are impervious to temperature and humidity. The exterior finish is a textured, matte, polyurethane baked on and able to shrug off the usual scuffs and knocks. H-S precision’s PST series stock was chosen as the Remington 700 Police stock and is listed in floorplate and detachable magazine models in either black or desert tan finish.
Both of these stocks have relatively conventional lines and are light enough not to compromise the mobility of the rifle. Accuracy International on the other hand put aesthetics last when they designed a no compromise sniper rifle to win the British Army’s contest to replace the venerable Lee Enfield L42A1. They wanted the most solid possible bond between the action and chassis and went the whole way, gluing it permanently with incredibly strong epoxy resin to make it a single unit. The result was arguably the best sniper rifle in the world, but one that was far too expensive for most civilian shooters to own. AI won many military users including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgoium, Sweden and Australia, but they wanted to break into the US civil market. To make an affordable rifle they adapted their chassis system to take the Remington 700 in its short and long action guises.
AI’s ‘civilian’ stock, the AICS, is machined from a single billet of aerospace grade aluminium onto which the glass reinforced polymer panels are bolted. A V-shaped bedding block aligns the rifle and two bolts (supplied) hold it rigidly in place. This resulted in an unconventional slab-sided shape, but this makes the rifle easy to carry when slung with AI’s twin shoulder harness sling. Provision is included for both AI and Harris bipods. Different height optical sights are allowed for by a screw adjustable cheekpiece and a thumbhole grip provides good control. Bolt on spacers are used to adjust length of pull. Doule stack five and ten round magazines are available for the .308 and .243 Winchester and a 5 round single stack unit for the .300 Winchester. The Stage 1.5 and Stage 2.0 version differ in the latter boasting an ingenious folding mechanism, each being available in short and long action formats with panels in green, dark earth or black. All of this robustness comes at a price, which is up to 5 lb. 11 oz. and (as of January 2011) $1100 in long action folding format, but you are getting the prestige of a system adopted by the US Navy SEALs as the Mk 13 Mod 5.
