Keeping Your Craft Area Organized
Many people abandon their crafts simply because they’re not able to create a craft work area and keep it organized. Click here for more organizing ideas for your home, office or garage. If your space is small it’s even harder. Have a look at these ideas and use the ones that work for you. Adapt them to suit your own needs and even use more than one idea together.
A container that’s large enough to contain everything you need for your craft is absolutely necessary. Using lots of little boxes creates even more clutter. Some crafts need more spance than others. For example, a craft like papier mache uses glue, paste, paints, brushes etc. that all fit in a relatively small container, but sewing can spread out over an entire room if you let it!Small cabinets with drawers are excellent crafting containers. Buy old ones at garage sales and paint or finish them attractively so that they fit with the rest of the furniture in your room.
If you need to store your materials in a different place from where you work, a container on wheels is an ideal solution. I love using clear plastic drawer units in different sizes, which I get in the hardware store.
Shelves can also convert a small area of a room into a craft corner. Just make sure you put all your supplies in good looking containers that fit the shelves. Untidy cluttered craft shelves can ruin your whole room.
What’s your best craft location?
As with containers, this depends on the craft. Big model aircraft, for example, need a whole room. Don’t try to cram this type of activity into a small corner, or you’ll give up in frustration.
Other types of hobby can fit in a corner of a room. The space should be comfortable, or you’ll never go there. Stop any drafts and put in nice bright lighting. If your craft requires electrical outlets, make sure they are readily accessible so you don’t trip over the cords.
A big wardrobe, armoire or cupboard can serve as both workspace and container. I know a woman who has a beautiful old wardrobe in her bedroom. She’s refitted the inside with shelving, drawers and a pull-out table top that allows her to put together her beautiful beadwork as well as her handknit sweaters.
Using the right containers is the big secret to having a great, organized area for your craft or hobby.
