Is Transparency International All That Transparent?
Over the past few months I’ve written a number of articles based on the leaked cables found on Wikileaks, which originated from the US Embassy in Malabo. From the first time I came across these cables I got the sense that there was a little more to Equatorial Guinea than what I had previously read in the popular press and I was curious to find just what that might be.
What I found, for the most part anyway, were a lot of rehashed stories, which seemed largely out of date and in stark contradiction to what some of the people on the ground are saying about Equatorial Guinea, particularly the US Embassy in Malabo, which warns us to beware of what we are told about Equatorial Guinea, as the ground truth is likely to differ.
Wikileaks may have given us some food for thought as to the current state of affairs in Equatorial Guinea today, but if you are willing to dig a little deeper you will find that it doesn’t end there. Very recently it was revealed on the government of Equatorial Guinea’s website that, Mr. Daniel Lebègue, the president of the NGO Transparency International France, who allegedly are fighting for social justice in Equatorial Guinea, is also the Administrator and Chairman of the Committee of Auditors of TECHNIP. Interestingly, TECHNIP just signed a contract with Equatorial Guinea in 2010 for offshore exploitation in EG’s waters.
Now to me this is a pretty serious accusation and certainly newsworthy, given the severity of the implications, but aside from the EG’s own web site I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else. You can find information confirming Mr. Lebegue’s involvement in both organizations, but there doesn’t appear to be any mention elsewhere, either to issue a rebuttal, confirm or completely dismiss the accusation altogether. Does this not seem odd to anyone?
Now understanding this is been posted on the government’s own site you have to ask yourself if this information can be trusted to be authentic given it is coming from a supposedly dictatorial government, but it still begs the question; Why is no one else is making a big fuss about it, or any fuss at all for that matter?
