Are You Encouraged To Be More Like A Celebrity?
More and more young girls yearn to look like their famous counterparts and mirror their images. With an increasing number of cosmetic brands poaching A-list celebrities to front their campaigns, it is almost impossible to avoid these glossy TV and Press adverts.
Pairing make up launches with a hot celebrity face has become like perfume and aftershave adverts, whereby you come to associate the brand with the celebrity rather than the product. Charlize Theron famously fronted the J’adore by Dior advert in the long gold dress, Gisele Bundchen and Matthew McConaughey represented D&G, Liv Tyler for Givenchy, and Josh Holloway’s toned physique in the Davidoff Cool Water advert; the list is endless.
The world of mascara has also attracted a whole host of famous faces, including the likes of Zooey Deschanel, Eva Longoria, Kate Moss, Penelope Cruz and Julia Roberts. Ads now have to include disclaimers if they enhance their celebrity’s look with eyelash extensions or the like so that consumers don’t have unrealistic expectations of what the product can do for them. They offer unrealistic statistics and the celebrities are often wearing false eyelashes to exaggerate the product. Disappointingly, the reality is that girls buying into these products will never reach the star look they are aspiring towards.
Copying celebrity fashion and make up, however, has become a phenomenon and regularly features in magazines, forums and websites. Celebrity hints and tips draw us in; hide everything with the latest foundation, the expensive shoes, the celeb lipstick that will bag you a footballer. The logic is slightly flawed, in that if we all use the same products we’ll all be able to look airbrushed to perfection.
Celebrities are now finding increased opportunities in the world of cosmetics; from being the face of big brands to creating and launching their own makeup ranges. Nicola from Girls Aloud has made her offering all the more personal by offering a range specifically for pale skin like hers. Jemma Kidd, former model, founded a makeup school in London and subsequently launched her own cosmetics line. Last month, Fearne Cotton also jumped on the bandwagon – fronting her own make up range for Boots.
