Tips for Repairing Your Air Conditioner
Consider this scenario: It’s July, your air conditioner just died, and you’re hesitant to pay several hundred dollars to have a repairman come fix it. Before dropping all that cash on a repairman or similar service, take the time to learn that you can do a few things to self repair your air conditioner.
One of the first things you’ll need for air conditioner repair is the owner’s manual. Whenever you get an item like an air conditioner installed, be sure to keep the manual and any other documents related to the unit to use as a reference, in case there are problems. If you can’t find the manual or didn’t keep it, look online for the information from the manufacturer’s website. Many companies, such as Kenmore or Lennox, will have what you need on the web. It’s also okay to call the manufacturer and request a new manual before you get involved in your own air conditional repairs.
Before you begin checking the unit for problems, make sure that it is completely off. You can shut off the unit on the electrical panel, or go to the outdoor compressor of your home and find the disconnect or “off” button located there. Sweep all leaves and dirt away from the area around the air conditioner where you’re going to work, so that you won’t get any parts of the unit dirty while you’re starting your repairs. Take the protective grill off the unit, and with a soft brush remove any dirt and grime that may have collected inside. A brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner works great for this as well.
After you’ve removed the grill, be careful not to disturb any wires inside the unit. You may even need to hose off the fins, if they’re especially dirty. You may be required to lubricate the motor for air conditioner repair, but be sure not to over lubricate.
After you’ve completed these tasks, you can put the unit back together. Be sure to put all the parts together in the same order you took them apart. Then, test the unit by turning it back on and set the thermostat. Let the unit run for a few minutes, and make sure all of the pipes are properly attached to the condenser. One of the pipes should feel cool, and the other should feel warm. This means that the temperature of the air will be even throughout your home or office. If both pipes are the same temperature, it may be necessary to seek professional help if they don’t correct within a few minutes of time.
